David Cameron Visit

Friday saw an excellent event in Cardiff Bay hosted by the Welsh Conservative Party with David Cameron in attendance marking two years as Leader of the Conservatives.

With over 300 in attendance including Nick Bourne Leader of the official opposition in the Assembly, Cheryl Gillan - Shadow Secretary of state for Wales, Jonathan Evans MEP, Welsh Assembly members past and present - this was certainly a great event.

It was great to see former assembly members such as Glyn Davies and Laura Ann Jones in attendance and I have to agree with Glyn's comments - where did all those young people come from? The fantastic efforts the team put in at Freshers Fayres in September has paid off - CF members from North Wales, Aberystwyth, Swansea, Glamorgan and Cardiff all in attendance!

Another Cancellation

Much to my disappointment (as I posted a month ago), the planned General Election for today has been cancelled!

You can find an excellent poster at www.conservatives.com with further information!

BY-ELECTIONS

Last week the party suffered mixed fortunes in by-elections across the UK making gains in the North West and Essex. However in Stansty - Wrexham where I stood as the Conservative candidate we came from having not stood a candidate in the ward before to an expected 3rd to beat Plaid (whos candidate is their new press officer!). The Liberals lost the seat to Labour and our vote was squeezed by the two leading rivals. "The suprise swing to Labour" was based on a culmination of a well known candidate, an established base vote in the ward and the usual anti-tory spin based on our coalition with the Liberals and Independants on Wrexham Council.

CF ELECTIONS

The national CF elections due to take place this autumn have now been postponed until the new year! More information on the area and national elections for CF can be found at the revamped www.ConservativeFuture.com ...

The Balloon That Never Went Up

Gordon Brown today announced he would not be calling an early election. Brown bottled it, with a series of poll swings to David Cameron's Conservatives it was clearly a risk to take. The reality was the Conservatives were ready for the balloon to go up, and such preparations will no doubt contribute to the future campaign. The unfortunate side is that we have to wait for our chance to govern however there is no doubt we are certainly in a stronger position than may have been perceived in recent times and the reality that Brown's Bounce has ended and we are seeing a comeback for the Conservatives...

A view from outside on the Political situation

From all the hype Brown has generated from his first few months in office, I have a sneaky suspicion that his luck will run out very soon and in regards to an early general election well its all to play for, for us Conservatives. Over the past five weeks I have been away from the UK and will be so until mid December, but every time I have heard or read some news from Britain it has always been full of spin generated from the Brown, news making Brown appear to be a great statesman even having the nerve to compare himself to Margaret Thatcher. Well you make think he hasn't done such a bad job, well let me tell you why you are wrong. Firstly despite being promised by Labour government of Blair, yes Brown did have a highly significant role in it, that we were going to have a referendum on the EU constitution, Brown has decided to break his promise and decide to sign more powers to Brussels without asking the people. Secondly Britain has had foot and mouth outbreaks which Brown took advantage of to make himself seem tough, whilst ignoring those farmers suffering with the loss of their livelihood because of errors. Thirdly Brown sought to compare himself to the political great of Margaret Thatcher, well isn't Brown a member of a party which both opposed very strongly as well as Brown himself everything that Thatcher stood for. I can talk all day about Brown and the his Labour government, issues such as higher taxation, an increase in lawlessness, the Iraq War which was started by a government Brown had a significant role in, but I haven't got all day. In regards to our own party, the conference appears to be going well, we have announced some good policies such as abolishing inheritance tax for the ordinary person and scrapping the early prisoner release scheme because of lack of prison places created by the Labour government. I'm sure the opinion polls will reflect this soon, although we have to take these with a pinch of salt. I think we are well placed at the moment to challenge Brown in an election and remember as a party we have all to play for, I don't want to make a prediction but if I was Brown I would be pretty concerned because the spin he has generated to the public is starting to wear off.

Croeso i Aberystwyth

Welcome to Aberystwyth...

Firstly I would like to Welcome all new students to Aberystwyth and those who are returning to the university. Having been Chair of Aberystwyth Conservative Future for the past year I would like to encourage as many students as possible to engage in politics at student level with political parties and the students union.

Conservative Future (aka CF) is the youth wing of the Conservative Party and one of the largest youth organisations in the UK. Aberystwyth is the largest branch in Wales, also one of the largest in the UK and throughout the year participate in a range of political and social events. This year Aber CF will be host to a range of drinks receptions and dinners with guest speakers from across Wales and the UK (previous speakers include Nick Bourne AM - Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly for Wales, Cheryl Gillan MP - Shadow Secretary of State for Wales, Stephen Crabb MP and Justine Greening MP). There will also be visits to Cardiff, and also the Welsh Conservative Party Conference in North Wales!

Aber CF is one of the largest social societies within the University so if you would like to join please contact this years Chair Genevieve Isherwood on gei5@aber.ac.uk and show her you support to make it another fantastic fun year for Aber CF!

This blog will continue to give commentary on a range of issues and events ... so stay tuned!
