Ban alcohol for under 15s?

I discovered this headline on my mobile phone earlier today, and was quite surprised, considering I had always thought it already was banned. It turns out, on closer inspection, that the organisation "Alcohol Concern" has called for parents who give under 15s alcohol to be prosecuted. Yes, prosecuted. Call in the CPS, a 14 year old had a Budweiser. Heres hoping for a good lawyer.

Supposedly justifying this response is a new study showing an increase in alcohol consumption among children:
The report's figures, published by the Information Centre (IC) last November, showed boys aged 11 to 13 who had drunk the previous week drank an average of 12 units of alcohol in 2006 compared to eight in 2000. The figure for girls increased from just under five units in 2000 to just over eight in 2006.

Yes, there is something wrong about an 11 year old boy on 12 units a week. This is like, what, 6 cans a week? (he says, wearily taking a glance at an old discarded Fosters he just found on the floor) Its not acceptable, but its not a worldwide crisis.

Spelling out the bloody obvious is the sorry burden I am duty bound to shoulder for this blog: Does it not seem likely this drinking is taking place with parents absent? Are there really mothers and fathers across the country calling out to their sons, demanding (or even "allowing", implying the parents have actively given permission) they neck 6 cans of beer?

We are saved

I hereby propose we scrap all funding and attempts to alter global warming and instead put the funds into space travel. Today scientists discovered a new earth like planet that is only 20.5 light-years away! With temperatures between 0 and 40 degree Celsius, it begs the question why aren't we there already? Terrain is either rocky or under water. Well mountains and such would not be a huge problem and if its just oceans then we can turn to Kevin Costner for advice on how to live in a world of water. Lastly everyone would all have a birthday every 13 days, resulting in a happier and more celebratory world. I'll start packing...

A different world

Came across the website http://www.armedamerica.org/index.html. Shows the huge problems America has in regulating gun ownership and in turn avoiding scenes like last week.

Rod Richards speaks out

Rod Richards, the previous leader of the Welsh Conservatives in the Assembly has spoken out ahead of May 3rd. He stated that:

"I will not be voting in the Assembly elections because nobody standing represents me or my views and I have taken a positive decision to abstain, which shows my disdain for the way the Assembly is operating. I certainly won't be voting Conservative because they don't deserve it and have no credibility in my view."

He went onto add that:

"All politicians from all parties are basically cardboard cutouts". "As a result our political culture has become too sterile and politically correct and I get the impression that MPs do not say what they are thinking, as they used to."

Thanks for that unbiased and insightful view on the state of the Conservative Party, which I am sure has not be influenced at all by the grudges and sour grapes you hold.

Carefully does it

So we've been told recently how much sleep we should have, what we should eat, how much exercise to do, how much tv to watch and now Sheryl Crow has decided to inform us of how much toilet paper we should be using. Guess what, wiping our arses is destroying the planet.

Crow has suggested using "only one square per restroom visit, except, of course, on those pesky occasions where two to three could be required".

Such a restriction may be ok for our anorexic celebrities but come on what about curry nights, it could get terribly messy. But fair play to her, I had forgotten she even existed until this global warming/authoritarian music tour. It really is a fantastic way of getting in the news...roll on live earth.

Security theft?

Just filling in a CRB form and am surprised at the documents that they want attached to the application. For example Passport, Driving Licenses, Bank statements, Pension Statements, Addressed Pay Slip, National Insurance Card and Birth Certificate are just some of the supposably safe documents to send through the post. Oh well I'm sure it will be alright as long as they don't get lost in the post, stolen in the post, stolen on arrival, stolen on the return post or lost on the return post. Hmmmm

Des Browne must quit now

This story has had my blood boiling for to many days. I am eagerly awaiting Des Borwne's statement on Monday. Hopefully he will at last explain what went on within his Westminster bubble that made him think that allowing the captives to sell their stories was a good idea. However frankly all I want to hear are the words "I resign". He has no place within a British government.

So many precious British armed forces lives have been lost around the globe for little money in compensation. Many more have been injured. One story in recent memory stands out. A soldier called Jamie Cooper who has captured the hearts of Bristol football fans. Jamie aged 18, is the youngest serviceman to be injured in Iraq. On his return to the UK for a shrapnel injury he caught MRSA. Stories of his treatment at Selly Oak, have illustrated the disgraces with how we treat our brave boys and girls in the armed services. One such example is how he was left to lie in his own faeces after his colostomy bag overflowed. Jamie Cooper now relies upon a wheelchair to get around but is thankfully recovering. This is a man who has shown incredible bravery and yet received terrible treatment and no recompense in return.

Des Browne and the other Labour cronies think its fine to fob off cases such as Jamie's and instead allow people like Faye Turney to earn more than most soldiers earn in six or seven years. I have had reservations as to what to think about the treatment that the captives received. But despite these was relieved when they came home. They should have been given any support and rest as necessary and then returned to duty. In my opinions those who decided to take the money should no longer have a position to return to. They have shown a total lack of respect for those who faced real and prolonged torture, those who are facing it through illness and injuries and those who no longer feel anything due to their lives being lost. I have lost any sympathy for Turney and her rogue bandits but most of all for Des Browne who allowed them to become enticed by greed.

There is only one course of action, Des Browne’s head rolls and so do those who took the money and not given it to charity. Lets not forget that this decision is not something that can be hidden underneath the carpet. Rather will the Iranian government and public be so “forgiving” next time they capture UK personnel after the way we have paraded our troops in the media? I suggest not and we have given the Iranian government every reason and support they need to put any other captives through even worse treatment. I pray that this is not the legacy of Des Browne and his disrespectful sailor’s actions.

Happy Easter Break!

The day is upon us

Today, April 2nd, it will become a crime against the State for the owners of privately run businesses to allow their customers to smoke. There is no bone in my body which can begin to understand how such a thing can be justified.

May I extend my gratitude to all those well-to-do MPs and AMs who took it upon themselves to debauch the principles of tolerance, freedom of choice, property rights and localism in the name of hysterical science and dictatorial puritanism.

I implore all those people who so vociferously support this legislation to read an obscure little novel, published in 1932, of the title Brave New World. You need to.
